Mr Mao: Fancy Felines by MargieandtheMoon in New Orleans

I’m Margie, a New Orleans-based artist specializing in illustration, painting, and murals. In addition to being an artist, I’m a mother and professor—balancing these roles has deepened my dedication to the arts and my passion for mentoring young minds. Growing up in Natchez, Mississippi, as one of six children, I learned the value of teamwork early on, which has been essential in my large-scale mural projects. My paternal grandmother introduced me to art, immersing me in fiber arts and pattern work that sparked my fascination with bold shapes, colors, and textures. As my career evolved, I found inspiration in themes of female friendships, human connection, and motherhood—the original inspiration behind my business. My journey as both a mother and an artist began at the same time, shaping my early branding around themes of motherhood. I started by designing baby blankets, which inspired the name Margie ****—a tribute to the time I spent reading bedtime stories like Goodnight Moon to my children. I kept the name because it reflects my youthful artistic style, which is prominently seen in my love for anthropomorphic figures. As I began working on murals and film sets, I became captivated by the ability to transform a window—a simple source of light—into an emotionally evocative experience. Over time, my role in the New Orleans art community grew, and I am immensely grateful for their support, along with my father’s, which has been vital to my success. My community involvement ranges from my work as a Tulane Design professor, mentoring students in graphic design, to my mural projects at Ayu Bakehouse, Mister Mao, The Broadside, Smoke and Honey, and the Waldorf School of New Orleans. I’ve also worked as an illustrator for brands such as Pyrex, Zehno Marketing, and Trader Joe’s. For me, art is not just a career—it’s a way to connect with my community, beautify my city, and educate young minds, including my two sons. I continue to expand my practice in murals, illustration, and design while mentoring the next generation of artists, offering college students internships as an entry point into the world of design.
