Gina Leon - Gutiérrez is an artist, mural painter, and arts educator. Born in South Africa, raised in Canada, she is now based in Los Angeles, California, where she works as a visual artist, mural painter and actress. She studied Theatre and Art history at the University of Toronto, Visual Art at the College of Art and Design in Sydney Australia, Acting at the New School for Drama in New York City. ​She trained at the Social and Public Art Resource Center under renowned muralist Judith F. Baca, deepening her interest in public art and social justice monument-making. Her paintings and murals have been showcased in Vancouver, New York City, and Los Angeles - exploring narratives about connection, memory and resilience. Her interdisciplinary background in theatre, visual arts, community based-practice and arts education – focuses her emphasis on modes of storytelling. In her painting and mural-making- she weaves together elements of process and personal narratives about connection, memory, dreams and resilience. Her project "Connecting the Dots" is a series of 100 pieces linked (“connected”) as a centrych – with personal stories, memories and dreams reimagined, non-linear passages of time, poetic atmosphere and stylistic shifts in painting. “Connecting the Dots” - I am drawn to the delicate little fibers that bridge together people, places and events: the in-between moments, the connective tissue, the liminal spaces where memory and dreams surface. This is embodied in a series of 100 interconnected works entitled “Connecting the Dots” and something I have revisited in mural production. "Resilience" is a series of doves painted as hopeful messengers in land ravaged by the LA fires, as symbols of renewal - painted in landscapes, lush and teaming with life. I have long been inspired by the many ways artists have depicted doves - Picasso, Chagall, and Matisse among them - minimalist lines, dreamlike narratives and vibrant cut-outs. The dove carries a symbolic resonance across iconographies, literature and mythology: representing peace, hope, unity, love, fertility, new beginnings, protection and freedom. In a series entitled “Resilience” - doves have become recurring motifs - as messengers of hope amidst environmental crisis and symbols of new beginnings in land regenerated and lush, in personal stories about love and loss. Resilience is the ability to move from bleak hardship to light, to recovery — a movement toward healing. It is a land once barren, now green and teeming with life. It is a dried riverbed renewed - free flowing and fertile. It is the wisdom our bodies hold — the capacity to heal, to bounce back. In bleak moments, we need inspiration — something to cling to. Hope. And hope inspires resilience.
