Melancolie by The Art of Syn in Concord

Part 2 of The Unraveling Series. A series focusing on emotions and mental health represented and symbolized through color, flowers and expression. These paintings stem from the topic of emotional expressiveness in the black community but can relate to everyone. This painting was very personal to me. It depicts the emotions of depression and speaks those suffering from mental illness. I chose the bold color red to emphasize it and capture your attention. The face on the strips show somebody who seems relaxed and content but on the inside the skull is cracked and broken. The skull is exposing what is really going on. A tear is added to also show the true sadness felt by the subject. strategically, I used three main flowers. The rose to show the content on the outside, the "forget-me-not" white flowers to represent the depression. Lastly the third flower is the black Dahlia. Hidden behind the rose and meant to blend into the background to represent the "Masking" that people with mental illness do. Hiding behind a face that looks fine, yet they aren't.
