Iki Island by Abbey Rich in Melbourne

Iki Island

This mural was the culmination of relationships formed whilst on residency at Iki base in Iki Island, Nagasaki, Japan. Akiko is the artist liason for Iki base and together we met with local businesses, the mayor and the department of Tourism who were keen to have me paint a large mural somewhere on the island. This was it! Such a beautiful location and it all come together in a matter of days! Such a big beautiful project and we are currently in talks about me returning to the island to keep making more work. This was my first International install and was such an exciting experience having to adapt to the local customs, to use new materials and make work in an unfamiliar community. I loved getting to know everyone and have gained a huge amount from this experience. I have such sweet videos of all the children running down the hill to engage with the artwork as soon as it was finished.
