I was invited by Sarah Bonnell School in Stratford, east London to hold creative workshops that would lead to the painting of a mural in the assembly hall.
The theme explored was identity. Over the course of several weeks we workshopped what identity means to us, and how we view our own identity. The students chose to include all the flags of the countries that made up the demographic of their group as well as symbols that are important to them. These included music, a windrush inspired boat and an astronaut, representing the furthest reach.
I am primarily a muralist and painter, doing large scale work on walls/canvas. Colourful, bold, block colour animals, objects and characters. Engaging in cultural histories, symbols, storytelling and nature to explore place and identity. Each artwork is an extensive research and development project, lending itself to collaboration, often including community/youth workshops.
I have several years’ experience working as a commercial illustrator before focussing in the last few years as a mural artist and educator, working more closely with local communities. Through my practise as a muralist, I have painted large scale artworks for several organisations and local councils. I am currently an artist educator for the Bow Arts Trust, facilitating art workshops for schools in east London.
Through my educational work I have led workshops at a number of organisations including Mind and the V&A: Museum of Childhood, as well as a number of schools and youth clubs around London.
