The history of the police in Indonesia traces back to the kingdom of Majapahit era, with Patih Gajah Mada pioneering the formation of a security force (bhayangkara) tasked with protecting the king and the kingdom. During the Dutch colonial era, the security force evolved with the formation of units comprised of indigenous people to safeguard the assets and wealth of Europeans and their officials. Under Japanese colonial rule, the development of the police force continued, transitioning into the era of the Republic of Indonesia's independence. Throughout the Old Order and the New Order periods, the police force underwent significant changes, ultimately evolving into the Indonesian National Police (POLRI) as it is known today.
