Grand Parents Day Mushroom Forest
On September 8th, a whimsical “Mushroom Forest” sprang up to celebrate Grandparents Day, blending art and nature to explore the connection between mushrooms and grandparents. Working with friends and fellow Vancouver Design Nerds, I wanted to draw parallels between mushroom mycelium—the underground network that sustains plant life—and the role of grandparents as connectors and nurturers within families. The activation invited participants to reflect on the wisdom passed down from elders and consider what they might share with future generations.
An unexpected treat setting up very publicly was all the curious residents and conversations in the days leading up. Working literally on the ground, Heather and I heard from a herbalist, a forester, and even a yeast scientist! 🌱🧬
A personal highlight for me was when a resident approached and shared, “I have three granddaughters, and I’ve never thought about the role I play in their lives like this.” 💬💕
