In the early stages of painting this image, I thought it was going to be a wintry scene. Outside the studio it was just after winter solstice, north Texas was having its first “winter storm” of the season. On the painting, the moments of white sure looked like snow. Meanwhile my logical thoughts were in a Rubik’s cube of quandary on how to work with the shifting background. I followed the clues of the painting as it revealed itself. Trusting the intuitive ideas that arose along the way. And in trusting the painting, I grew a deeper trust in myself. Trusting my process. This painting was a good “see-me-through-winter” friend. The background in this painting has a vast color shift spectrum that kept me guessing on what colors to use. The first paint strokes started with the Fibonacci spiral. Representing the ever spiraling quality of nature. The perfectly timed, perfectly spaced rhythms and cycles of life. Seasons arise and morph one into another. Tides rise and fall. The sun waxes and wanes. And change occurs. The first color I knew was blue. As if the stream had thawed out and the water was flowing again. End with the flowing water came spring, because the trees turned green. And the spirit bear, though it was translucent for much time, it steadily solidified into a golden brown. And it brings a reminder that the sun will shine again. Trust the depths of winter. Trust the hibernation. Trust the warmth of the hearth in the den. And when the sun does shine again, so shall life.
