Fields of Gold and Fire by Clara-Jane Carpenter in Northampton
Fields of Gold and Fire
A gloriously alive depiction of a Northamptonshire cornfield in full summer, blazing with the iconic scarlet of wild poppies scattered through the crop. The foreground is densely textured with tall stalks and grasses, and notably some of these catch the light with touches of gold, giving them a luminous, sun-kissed shimmer that lifts the whole foreground beautifully. The painting moves through distinct layers, a richly textured foreground of deep purples, greens and earthy browns threaded with scarlet poppies, into a vast warm middle ground of glowing golden corn that seems to radiate heat and light. A band of deep green foliage of a treeline marks the horizon before giving way to a soft, pale sky of muted blues and gentle lavender. Painted with real energy and confidence. Brushwork is bold, thick and highly textural, building up the surface with considerable richness. The poppies feel substantial rather than merely decorative, each one asserted with a committed stroke of scarlet. The gold highlights on the stalks are a particularly lovely touch, suggesting sunlight landing at just the right angle across the field.

Meet the Artist
Northampton, United KingdomFrom her studio in a picturesque village on the border of Northamptonshire, Clara-Jane creates artwork that bridges traditional style with contemporary energy. Her artistic foundation was shaped in Cornwall, where she had the privilege of studying under distinguished artists including Rod Walker, Robert Jones, Jason Wason and the late Colin Scott, whose influences continue to inspire her work today.
Her pieces have found homes across the globe - from Turkish coastline apartments to Australian outback homes, American city pads to Canadian farmhouses. In 2024, her work was featured in four issues of World of Interiors, and she currently has a solo exhibition in a salon in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire.
At the heart of her practice lies a bold approach to acrylics, where vibrant hues move across the canvas in fluid, confident strokes. Whether capturing the spirited essence of animals or translating undulating landscapes into both abstract expressions and classical interpretations, each piece tells its own story. This versatility has enabled her to fulfil a diverse range of commissioned works, each tailored to her clients' visions while maintaining her distinctive artistic voice.
Clara-Jane’s technique is characterised by direct application and on-canvas colour mixing, creating rich, dimensional layers that bring each piece to life. While her signature style embraces energetic, loose brushwork, she can seamlessly transition to precise detail when a commission demands it. This flexibility, combined with her passion for capturing the essence of each subject, ensures every piece resonates with its intended audience.
