I am a figurative portrait painter, working in oils and acrylics, painting from life and photographs. Moreover i am a professional graffiti-mural artist. I am interested in the material properties of paint when it comes to displaying a spiritual impression, through transparent auras and faded outlines. My work addresses the legacy of Greek myths and their relevance in a contemporary context. I am interested in how they resonate with Carl Jung’s psychoanalytical theory of the four archetypes. I am influenced by the Old Masters’ and by Rembrandt in particular, as well as by contemporary artists such as Michael Borremans. By studying Rembrandt’s ‘Self-Portrait’ (1659) I have developed my own portraiture techniques. I use dry layers and later apply intense brushstrokes of thick, wet paint to create intensity and volume. Borremans’ compositions have shown me the possibilities of fiction, allowing me to explore both contemporary and traditional techniques, utilising storytelling in figurative works by using everyday models.
