Dim Sum and Cars by Arthur Koch in San Francisco
Dim Sum and Cars
20'x8' mural painted with Precita Eyes Acryllic mural paint. Dim Sum and Cars. Rainbow Dragons, Lion Dancers, meet vintage cars and motorcycles in San Francisco’s Portola District. The concept behind my mural was inspired by Dim Sum and Cars, an annual community event by the Portola Neighborhood Association in the bank parking lot across from The Avenue Theater, Out the Road Bar, and Imperial Garden, as well as our newly installed streetlights for more nightlife! In addition to the vintage cars, I also including vintage motorcycles to pay tribute to "Spade George" who ran a motorcycle chop shop on San Bruno Ave for many years called “The Hole in the Wall.” He's referenced in Rayna Garibaldi’s book about The Portola on page 84, as well as many of the vintage cars San Pancho (San Francisco) Califas (California) car club restored. The mural features a lion dancer interacting with kids and a rainbow dragon in the sky to represent our growing Chinese population. I also included Dana Albany's awesome metal gate dedicated to the Green Between (our community garden). She also designed the head of the Rainbow Dragon for Recology made of recycled materials while she was an artist in residence and featured in the Chinese New Year parade every year. I included a few people from the neighborhood like retired firefighter Chuck Farrugia (The Maltese Prince). Chuck remembers Spade working on his shovelhead Harley when he was a kid. Pam and Phil Owen are sporting vintage British bikes they drove around India! Spade’s wife Tracy is on back holding on tight when she’s not riding her own bike. Raul “The Bulldozer” Romero is framed by the Portal and honored for all his volunteering by the SF Board of Supervisors. San Pancho Califas Car Club President Renato Gonzalez is sporting the clubs logo on his jacket. The mural is dedicated to the building owner’s parents, Ronald and Frederica Mirchovich (plumbers since 1962). “Supported by the San Francisco Arts Commission.”
