Desmond Tutu Mural by Lucky Friday Artist in Wellington
Desmond Tutu Mural
I produced a mural design which was approved by the Desmond Tutu Ip Trust which was revealed on FREEDOM DAY (21 march 2023) in Cape Town, South Africa. It covered a wall area of 18 square metres 6m (w) x 3 M (H) and took me 6 days to complete with the help of an assistant. I used durable outdoor house paints combined with aerosol spray paints. My method was to project the image on the wall and then create large stencils for the African patterns and halftone screen. I always design on computer first, the client then agrees with the design and then I paint and replicate as closely as I can to the computer rendered design. You can read about this story on my website. This story was also featured in Good Magazine in New Zealand.
Lucky Friday is my artist name. I'm a graphic designer who originates from Wellington. I’ve worked across the globe for some of the largest advertising agencies on the planet as a creative director and now exploring my artistic talents. I play in the world of limited edition fine art prints, abstract landscapes, oil portraits with palette knives to large outdoor murals.
I’m inspired by Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Picasso, David Hockney & William Kentridge. In my graphic design career graffiti art, Bauhaus School of design and deconstruction influenced my career and fortunate to have won numerous international design awards for my graphic design and global advertising campaigns.
You maybe asking why the name “Lucky Friday”?
That’s a good question. It’s more to do with the amazing people I have connected with in Africa. Their names are so simple like “Precious, Lucky, Innocent, Beauty etc.” I chose Lucky Friday to represent my adopted Africanism.
I hope you enjoy the art you see and open for commissions.
