Denis (born 1984) is New York based artist. Starting as a self-taught urban artist tagging walls across New York, Denis quickly gained recognition for his large-scale murals. By the early 2010s, he expanded his artistic endeavors to encompass clothing, paper, and canvas, drawn to the democratic qualities of the pop scene and its ability to convey powerful messages through mass culture symbols. With over 15 years of practice and no formal training, Denis has honed his craft, drawing inspiration from his teenage graffiti days.
His art involves repurposing materials to deliver political statements, providing a layered perspective on the so-called American dream.
Denis's artistic process involves taking images or ideas and placing them into different contexts, showcasing his innate sense of color and composition. His affinity for screen printing allows him to translate his emotions rapidly into art, mirroring the fast-paced nature of contemporary life. Notably, Denis recently painted a massive mural of Elvis Presley in Brooklyn, a hub for New York street art, and showcased his work at Art Basel in Miami, including a mural featuring Elvis with a banana instead of a gun.
In early 2022, the artist's focus shifted to a pressing global issue: the overconsumption promoted by corporations in affluent countries, leading to multi-billion dollar profits, contrasted with the stark lack of food in poorer and developing nations.
