Deep Blue Devils - Main St Mornington by FatherMarker in Capel Sound
Deep Blue Devils - Main St Mornington
Created for the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council as part of their anti-graffiti campaign, this anamorphic mural was inspired by the existing palm tree and wooden box in the nook. I envisioned them as a pier pylon and a treasure box and looked for a local marine animal that would be guarding the treasure below the pier. I couldn’t go past the grumpy faced Blue Devil Fish which is found at the southern end of Port Phillip Bay. This mural was painted with aerosol paint with a bit of brushwork.
Meet the Artist
Capel Sound, AustraliaTyson Savanah is an Australian-born muralist and visual artist residing on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria.
With a passion for art, design and illustration and armed with a Bachelor of Industrial Design (with honours) degree from RMIT, Father Marker spawned in 2018 following the birth of his twin daughte. rs. Tyson’s artistic career began on the Mornington Peninsula as a freelance artist and designer flowing between client-directed projects and his more imaginative personal work. Projects include council and privately commissioned murals, ground art, freelance illustration work, logo & mascot design, merchandise, sign writing, vehicle wraps and everything in between.
Tyson was the successfully appointed artist of 2 of 5 mural sites for the Mornington Peninsula Shires Anti-Graffiti EOI Project in 2021/22, trumping over 200 applications from other responding artists and again for the Bentons Square Community Centre (Mornington) EOI mural project in 2021. Since then, he has received council-based grants to mentor young emerging artists on the Mornington Peninsula and develop mural painting workshops and anti-graffiti-based incentives around the peninsula.
Tyson’s art demonstrates an affinity for native flora and fauna with a focus on threatened and endangered species and is influenced by surrealism, adventure, myth and traditional folklore. Tyson’s work shows a strong sense of design combined with energetic colour palettes, humour, hope and an eye for detail. Whether this be large-scale murals or small canvases, Tyson continues to research and explore new forms of expression through different media, drawings and sculpture. Tyson also heads “The Lanternist” along with his partner, which blends traditional Chinese-style lantern sculpture with Australian flora and fauna to create luminous pieces of art used to enhance outside spaces and festivals for an ethereal nighttime experience.
Tyson aims to transform and complement public spaces with his art whilst representing and honouring the individual communities, cultures, species and history of each site in an engaging way.
