LEO LUNATIC is a visual artist and designer based in Istanbul, Turkey. As a contributor to Istanbul’s nascent urban art scene, Leo has brought global attention to Istanbul’s streets with his iconic panda, Roman and Grecian busts, and typeface. In 2013, with his most well-known work “Panda” he was shortlisted among the “Best 15 Graffiti Artists Around The World” by the readers of the British magazine, The Guardian. Since then Leo has collaborated with many notable brands such as Nike, Puma, Converse, Tommy Hilfiger, Mavi, Levi’s, GRMY, Lacoste, Les Benjamins, Warner Bros, Guinness, Samsung and so on. Also, a great number of brand collaborations happened during his artistic journeys such as with TEB, Yapı Kredi, H&M, Mini Cooper, Turkcell, YOO Architecture, DDF, Maçakızı, İstanbul ’74, Soho House İstanbul and many others. He was born in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 1987. In 1998 he moved to İstanbul, Turkey, and began spray-painting on trains and walls of the city. Since then, he lives and works in İstanbul, producing his works in multiple mediums while collaborating with many brands from various markets. Leo’s aesthetic reflects quintessential Istanbul; fusing influences derived from Western pop- culture and Ottoman motifs with ancient Roman and Greek sculpture, Leo creates his pop- art-esque works of art. Leo’s unique style embodies a contrast of bold color, graphics, typeface, geometric shapes, and fine art. Leo’s juxtaposition of old and new, modern and antique reflects not only his perspective but mirror the landscape in which he resides, namely modern-day Istanbul, a place where cultures have been blending together to create its individual style for over a millennium. In 2015, he began to expand his works beyond İstanbul, Turkey and soon started leaving his artistic marks all around the world by quickly becoming a well-known artist worldwide. So far, he has produced artistic works all around the world, including Turkey, the United States, Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Romania, Greece, Russia, and so on. He usually exhibits his works in public spaces, most commonly placing them on the walls of old buildings. Appearing as an experimental artist, he has no boundaries when it comes to art and its multi-disciplinary fields.
