Creatives in Schools Mural by Amy Burrell in Upper Hutt
Creatives in Schools Mural
Throughout the first half of 2022 I have been working on a special project with a class of intermediate students at St Joseph’s School in Upper Hutt. Over a ten week period we researched, designed and created this amazing 5m long mural to be hung at the entrance of the school. It features many things that are special to these students and who they are as a school. I absolutely loved being part of this project and it forced me to deconstruct my creative process in order to guide these student on their creative journey. Heres a breakdown of what we got up to.
I have been drawing characters since I was a kid and would spend the hour long bus ride home from primary school taking requests of what character to draw next. Every character I draw has distinctively large eyes that almost stare into your soul. My characters are cute, engaging, humorous and often a little chubby. I especially like to work in a bright modern colour palette but can adapt to suit your vision.
I have worked as a freelance illustrator for the past 15 years creating artwork for branding, children's books, educational resources, interactive learning applications. In the past few years I have moved into doing murals and absolutely love it. I have created murals for schools, early childhood education centres, city councils and even residential homes. These murals I painted with brushes.
I am always keen to push my style in different directions and can adapt to suit your creative vision.
