For the reception area of a hostel in San Vito Lo Capo, Sicily, I was commissioned to create a vibrant ceiling mural inspired by the yin-yang symbol. The design represents balance and harmony, with one half rooted in the elements of water and the other in earth.
The water side features intricate depictions of corals, sea life, and flowing waves, reflecting the beach town's coastal identity. The earth side is adorned with lush plant life, blending African flora—an homage to the hostel's roots in a life-changing journey to Senegal—with Sicilian vegetation, symbolizing a connection between two distinct yet intertwined cultures.
The mandala's circular symmetry draws the eye toward the center, where the two elements meet, creating a harmonious interplay of vibrant blues, greens, and earthy tones. Painted in acrylic, the mural bursts with rich detail and bold colors, enveloping the reception space with a welcoming and dynamic energy.
Suspended above guests as they arrive, the piece serves as a meaningful representation of the hostel's story and the natural beauty of both Sicily and Africa, offering visitors an inspiring glimpse into the interconnectedness of places and experiences.
