My name is Kamorudeen, I am an emerging artist from Lagos, Nigeria and, a
recent graduate of the Fine Arts Studio program at Centennial College, Toronto, Ontario.
By celebrating the use of familiar colours as well as stylized forms and emotional expressions
— My inspiration comes from surrealism and my culture. When I was approached by family and
peers to move to the city of Toronto, I didn’t hesitate. Instead, I moved with the idea of pursuing a
career in arts, learning about different cultures while, also studying to become a professional artist.
Now, I see myself, as an artist creating under the influence of Afro-Surrealism – a terminology
used for artists making West African Inspired Surrealistic Works out of (Nigeria, Benin & Ghana).
My conceptual ideas are bordered around the visual representations of fusing African culture and
surrealism with the use of sharp colours/contrasted background that feels like old cartoons.
The latter stylistic approach can be seen in a consistent character embedded in my artworks named
Binge, who is an alter ego. Binge has a box/enclosed cube for a head which, in context is created to
protect my ideas from distractions while, placing me within compositions that allow me to bear
witness.
My passion for photography has now led me unto the idea of referencing my original photographs
and my imagination. I, primarily paint using Acrylic, Graphite, and Ink but very interested in
expanding my approach with new mediums.
