Bristol Residential Mural by Joe Lichtenstein in London
Bristol Residential Mural
‘She saw the sun rise and knew it was a good day’ was commissioned by the builder and owner of the new houses in Montpellier, Bristol, who sought to breathe life into the area and bring an uplifting sentiment to the street. It was also important that the mural sit well alongside the other mural across the street made by artist Lucy McLauchlan, as part of the Upfest 2021 festival programme.
The artwork stands as a testament to the city's rich natural and ecological surroundings and the community that inhabits it. It has become a beloved landmark in the community, drawing in visitors from far and wide.
Firstly, a CAD drawing of the wall in question was rendered. Then the image which at this point had been drawn by hand on paper, was scaled to fit the exact dimensions of the wall.
Next the colours were chosen. Getting the tones correct at this stage is crucial. The colours were mixed to the exact specification and quantity in the appropriate type of paint.
Joe Lichtenstein is a multidisciplinary artist who seamlessly blends the realms of painting, theatre direction, and animation. He constantly seeks to bridge these art forms, incorporating elements of each into the others and creating unique and captivating artistic experiences.
His animations breathe life into static images through old fashioned stop-motion techniques, transforming something still into something living, a "kind of theatre." This fascination with blurring the lines between stillness and movement also permeates his theatrical productions. In "Fiesta," he ingeniously closed the fire curtain, placing the audience directly on stage to create an immersive experience that mirrored the dynamic interplay of his animations. Lichtenstein's approach dismantles the traditional boundaries between performer and spectator, inviting the audience to become active participants in his artistic vision.
His exhibition "If Only We Could Talk," demonstrated his boundary-pushing approach by requiring viewers to engage with paintings in a more interactive and performative way, underscoring his commitment to pushing the boundaries of artistic expression and exploring the intersections between different art forms.
Joe has a studio in the Essex countryside where he is based.
