Banksia on big sky by Thom Muir in Sydney

Banksia on big sky

The banksia releases its seeds when the bushfires come through. The destruction is its rebirth. The banksia knows there will be no thick undergrowth to suffocate its seedlings and they will have the best chance for new life in the fertile soil after the burn. In the painting, the banksia’s skin is like a microcosm of the burnt sky, they are connected; two parts of the same process. We see liquid, solid and gas move in the same dance at different paces. The Banksia is in harmony with its country, in tune with the rhythm of destruction and creation. The bushfires are getting worse, but the destruction can bring creation. I like to think that one day we can live in balance with the fire like the people of the First Nations did before, and continue in the flow like the banksia.
