And then the call went out

Painted for the Tuia250 Street Art Festival in Whitianga New Zealand. This artwork responds to the themes of navigation, exploration, and first encounters. When the M?ori first came to Aotearoa as Pacific navigators, there were no people ashore yet to call them on with karanga. However, the land, trees, and skys were full of birds. The first karanga was the bird song, calling out across the ocean. This was the very beginning of human habitation of this land, setting the scene for many subsequent arrivals.
