Alley Project
This is an alley project I have been working on for nearly 2 years. This was one of the worst alleys in Northeast KCMO. Before I started this project the slley was fully overgrown with weeds, it was full of trash and human excrement. This alley was used for all sorts of nefarious activities including dealing/doing drugs, prostitution, and illegal dumping to name a few.
I started by collecting and sorting the waste into resource categories: clothing, compostable, glass, metal, other recyclables, biohazard, brick/rock/building material, etc.
The recyclable materials were properly recycled, the clothing that was salvageable was cleaned and donated, the clothing that was severely damaged was payed down as a weed block and composted with the other compostable. The rocks and bricks were used to create raised garden beds. Tires that had been dumped in the alley were painted and used as flower pots and seating.
I brought in 3 dump-trucks the first year and 2 dump-trucks of mulch and dirt the second year to fill the garden beds and to lay down on the path. After the first year, the mulch in the path was used in the garden beds and more mulch was later layer down on the path.
This alley was completely converted into a community garden.
Once most of the work was completed I painted murals down most of the alley as a means of constant inspiration and to uplift the people in the alley.
The murals were tagged over with, "RIP Hustle Man" when one of the main drug dealers in the community was murdered. After some time had passed (out of respect for the mourning) I painted over most of the tags that they had covered the mural with leaving however small pieces (a heart and the word, "hope") re-touching the mural was quick for how much had been covered and it looked much nicer after it was done thsn it was originally (as this was designed knowing that it would probably be graffitied over at some point.) The patrons of this alley, and the neighbors surrounding the alley really enjoy this project and talk all the time about the value it has brought to their community, and to them specifically. One member mentioned more than once how the first thing they noticed was the smell - it is fresh, and refreshing! It has previously been used as a restroom so you can imagine the stark difference!
This is my passion project; this is the work that I am trying desperately to get back to doing. The little funding there was for this project is no longer available so I am trying to seek funding from anyone and anywhere I can get it. If you would like to support this cause, please hire me for your project. :) Thank you!
