'Cancion para el despertar del alba'(song for the awakening of the dawn' by Marisa Martinez in London
'Cancion para el despertar del alba'(song for the awakening of the dawn'
I won a public art competition run and funded by Bilbao Council in collaboration with Surbisa S.A. a prominent private architectual firm in Bilbao, Spain.
The commission involved producing 4 beautiful murals against 2 public buildings in a somewhat grey industrial location.
In creating these art works, I was inspired by the spirit, soul and tenacity of the children and mothers living in this deprived area of Zorroza, Bilbao.
To reflect this wonderful spirit of the local children, the painting I created featured the charming story of a swallow bird who is a musical director, depicted in the bottom right hand mural.
This musical director is the main character of the story, and he helps another little swallow bird, the other central character to find her voice which she had sadly lost through the many adversities and trials encountered in her little life.
The little swallow bird is supported and encouraged by a choir of fellow swallows, depicted in the bottom left hand mural, and also a group of swallow dancers shown in the top 2 murals, both these groups sing and dance in joy supporting and encouraging the little swallow bird to sing once again to the rising sun.
A story of triumph over adversity.
This work was later published in a book called 'Bilbao Egun Batez', shown in the 2nd image attached.
After the creation of the 4 murals I suggested to the local authority that the construction of a playground next to these designs would provide a fitting space for the local children to play.
The local authority follwed my suggestion, and built a playground for the community, providing an ergonmic, inspiring and stimulating environment for the children to play and create.
I was born an artist. My inspiration comes the deepest side of my soul, I get influence with my surroundings, have an inner capacity to create an original piece of art or design I enjoy the process.

At present I am an art&design lecturer for students with disabilities, working for further education at Southgate College, London.
I am passionate about art leads me to explore, play and free myself. My ability to create a new work feels like a new beginning, a journey that I always please to embark in.
