Mulga Interview

Joel a.k.a Mugla is a Sydney based artist (profile) and has a unique fun style when it comes to street art. It is very hard to put words so here’s an image.

Below is our interview with Mulga, have fun.

Tell us a bit about yourself and one thing that most people don’t know about you?

Hi! my name is Joel but professionally (if you can call it that) I am known as Mulga because when I was 11 I recited a poem in front of my class called Mulga Bill’s Bicycle by the legendary Aussie poet Banjo Patterson. From then on my nickname was Mulga. When I finished high school I went to university and got myself a Bachelor of Economics and then worked in the financial planning industry. After working in finance for 10 years I got to a point where I realized this wasn’t the thing that I should be doing with my career or life. I had always loved doodling and drawing so after reading a lot of books about doing what you love for a job I started taking drawing more seriously and started putting my drawings up on the net on a blog. The first posts on my blog where actually drawings that I did at work on post-it notes. After a couple of years of having my blog, I had an art show at a small local gallery and then after that, I started going to Bondi markets every Sunday selling tees and prints. After 2 years of going to work during the week and markets during the weekends and lots of late nights drawing and painting I quit my day job and became a full-time artist. That was at the start of 2014 and it’s been an awesome time, challenging but great.

What is your fondest personal memory in the world of painting? We love a good story.
The first time I painted a mural was in 2012 and I remember I had to take days off work to go to Bondi to paint it. It was pretty funny that for my first mural when I had no idea what I was doing and through some chance encounters I found MTV filming me painting the mural for an ad they made for Adidas and which they aired on MTV in Australia. Talk about faking it till you make it haha. If you google ‘mulga MTV Adidas’ you’ll find it.

Who inspires you to do what you do?
My children to an extent do, I have 3 kids aged from 9 to 5 and being able to provide a financially secure home for them whilst being in a career that I love is really sweet. I hope they will see that they can do what they want for a career if they are willing to put the work in and use their god given smarts to make a success of it.

What is the favorite piece of art that you have created? Give us a picture

Usually, it is the most recent piece of art that I make that becomes my favorite. Sometimes if it is in a slightly new direction and I like the look of it I get pretty excited. the most recent mural I painted was a scene full of flamingos in the office of a financial software company and that’s my favorite at the moment. The really cool thing about that project was that when I worked in financial planning I used the software that that company made and now I was painting a mural in their office.

Who would you rather be Banksy or Picasso and why?
That’s a no brainer. Bansky for sure because he is still alive. Also, he is a creative genius with all the ideas he comes up with. The built-in shredder frame, the selling originals on a street corner in NY for cheapo, hilarious.

What are you looking forward to in 2019?
I’m looking forward to taking my art in Asia. I’m working with some great peeps over there and am excited about the possibilities.

Anything you would like to add or you want the audience to know about?
I sell heaps of sweet merch so check it out in my internet shop and I will also have a stall at the 2019 Sydney Royal Easter show, so that should be great.

Thank you for reading it.
