London’s biggest mural pool in our data has already given us one roundup – a dozen projects from a Walthamstow terrace to a beaver-themed pedestrian underpass under Ealing. It turns out that barely scratched the surface. This time the wall space is less about murals-as-landmarks and more about murals doing a job: helping a special needs school teach the Tube map, giving an AI safety startup’s office some personality, cheering up a community play park, and turning an ordinary dining room into a window onto Tuscany.<\/p>\n

We went back through recent projects commissioned through Book an Artist in London<\/a> to find eight more, each with a finished, photographed wall, a real invoice and – where one exists – a genuine client review. Two of the strongest-looking candidates this time round had to be dropped at the last step: one had the artist’s own account handle hand-lettered into the only usable wide shot of the wall, and the other’s only listed photos didn’t actually match the mural that was described in the brief. What’s left is eight we could stand behind.<\/p>\n

Murals with a public job to do: a school and a park<\/h2>\n

Not every London mural is decorative. Two of this run’s strongest stories are murals doing genuinely useful work for the community around them.<\/p>\n

Every classroom at Heron Academy, a specialist school for children with special educational needs in Lambeth, is named after a London Underground line. At Heathbrook Park in Wandsworth, the brief was as much about process as the finished wall. The client wanted a mural for a play-area wall, but insisted the design come from the children themselves: a visit to engage a local special-needs school, followed by enough time on site to turn what the kids came up with into a finished painting, for a budget in the \u00a32,000 – \u00a33,200<\/strong> range. The result – a bold, colourful \u201cPLAY\u201d lettering piece with kids in mid-air on skateboards, roller skates and footballs woven through the letters – was painted by Shauna, the same artist behind the beaver-themed Ealing underpass in our first London roundup.<\/p>\n

From an AI safety office to two very different restaurants, commercial murals in this batch skew towards branding a space rather than simply filling it.<\/p>\n

Three walls, three easter eggs, one AI safety office<\/h3>\n

BlueDot Impact trains people for careers in AI safety and biosecurity, and wanted their east London office to say so without a single slide deck. The brief: three separate graphic murals, one per division of the business, each packed with in-jokes and references to the company’s own story – a strand of DNA and a protein for the biosecurity team, a GPU chip and a chess-playing robot for the AI team, on a budget in the \u00a31,200 – \u00a32,000<\/strong> range. Choots delivered all three, and the client’s review makes clear how much the detail mattered to them:<\/p>\n

The Acropolis, painted for a client a long way from home<\/h3>\n

Not every commercial brief is abstract. A client named Thomas, originally from Athens, asked muralist Lazaros for \u201ca nice mural of the Acropolis\u201d for a two-by-five-metre interior wall, with room to add extra elements if he wanted them later, on a budget in the \u00a3900 – \u00a31,500<\/strong> range. What Lazaros delivered is a moonlit night scene – the Parthenon lit gold against a deep blue sky, a full moon behind rolling clouds – that reads more like a framed painting than a rushed feature wall.<\/p>\n

Ceilings get overlooked as mural surfaces, but a restaurant in Ilford went straight there: an oriental-themed dragon, painted across the ceiling of the dining room, for a budget in the \u00a3400 – \u00a3700<\/strong> range. The finished piece is a coiled red-and-gold dragon weaving through pale clouds – the kind of thing that gets diners looking up instead of at their phones.<\/p>\n

Aisling’s two children – a five-year-old and a one-year-old, both highly sensitive but responsive to colour and the outdoors – got a garden wall painted with birds, butterflies and clover in bold colour on a black-painted brick base, for a budget in the \u00a3600 – \u00a31,000<\/strong> range. Petra, a muralist known for nature scenes, delivered a pergola-side wall thick with painted wisteria, roses and a bluebird mid-flight. The review is unambiguous:<\/p>\n
