New York doesn’t have empty walls so much as walls waiting for a reason. A roll-down security gate is signage between 6pm and 9am. A blank office wall is a recruiting problem. One apartment owner asked Daisy for \u201ca beautiful waterfall\u201d on a set of closet doors – she delivered a full woodland scene, moss-covered rocks, a two-tier cascade and butterflies drifting across both panels, scaled so the hinge line reads as a natural break in the composition rather than an interruption. $1,200 – $2,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A concrete jungle for the nursery<\/h3>\n

A different family wanted a nursery mural themed around a \u201cconcrete jungle\u201d – buildings that loosely resemble the Manhattan skyline, softened into a sage-green palette, with giraffes, a lion and an elephant tucked into painted foliage and a monkey draped over a branch in front of the Empire State Building. Not everything in this article is inside the five boroughs – several of the strongest projects in our data come from artists based in New York who work the wider metro. In Princeton, New Jersey, a homeowner asked for stars painted across their blue bedroom ceiling. Nick, a New York\u2013based artist, divided the ceiling into a grid of navy panels and filled each with a different constellation of gold stars, suns and shooting sparks, adding an extra day on site to finish the far corners. $500 – $1,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

New York’s commercial murals cluster around the same three problems: a company wants its brand on the wall, a kitchen needs personality, or a lobby needs a reason to stop and look.<\/p>\n

A solar-energy company’s New York office had a plain kitchen wall and a business with nothing visually interesting about it on paper – panels, inverters, permitting. A mental-health counselling practice needed its logo – a pair of pink footprints – painted onto the stone retaining wall in front of its office, alongside its hours and phone number, on a challenging uneven surface. Where a New York business meets the sidewalk or the waiting room is where these murals earn their keep hardest.<\/p>\n

A bagel shop’s mascot, twelve feet wide<\/h3>\n

Myrtle Ave. Bagels wanted an interior version of its logo – a pigeon wearing sunglasses and a backwards cap, mid-bite on an oversized bagel, coffee in hand – with a line-art sketch of the Clinton Hill neighbourhood behind it. Shaun painted it directly onto the white brick wall above the seating, ductwork and all. $3,000 – $4,500<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A skyline that plays saxophone<\/h3>\n

A pediatric dental office wanted its logo mascot – a cartoon tooth wearing sunglasses – reimagined playing saxophone over a New York skyline, with music notes trailing off toward the exit sign. Oksana matched the client’s own mockup almost exactly, working the Brooklyn Bridge and the Chrysler Building into the silhouette. $1,000 – $1,800<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Beyond the five boroughs: a hallway and a campground fence<\/h2>\n

Woodland Trails Campground, out in Vernon Township, New Jersey, wanted its name spelled out across a long concrete supporting wall in teals and greens, with a nature theme running the length of it.
