Los Angeles has been called the mural capital of the world since the 1970s, when the\u00a0Great Wall of Los Angeles<\/em> began stretching half a mile along the Tujunga Wash. The argument continues today in the Arts District, on the legal walls at Venice Beach, along Melrose and in every alley in Highland Park. So Angelenos don\u2019t stop at photographing murals – they commission them, on playroom ceilings, powder-room walls, gym walls under blacklight, dog-rescue yards and storefronts.<\/p>\n

We went through recent mural projects commissioned through\u00a0Book an Artist in Los Angeles<\/a> and across the metro – Pasadena, Santa Monica, Burbank, Silver Lake, El Monte, Westlake Village – to answer what people actually ask before hiring Los Angeles muralists<\/strong>: what gets painted, what it costs, and how the process runs. The wall that changed a corner in Echo Park<\/h3>\n

One homeowner in the Echo Park hills had roughly 90 feet of washed-out perimeter wall wrapping a corner lot. Instead of repainting it grey, they asked muralist Mariia for something that would \u201cfit\u201d the neighbourhood – Echo Park, Historic Filipinotown, the planting up the hill. What arrived was a hard-edged run of colour: diagonal ribbons of magenta, cyan, violet and gold that step around the gates and stop dead at the driveway, for a budget in the $1,500-$2,500<\/strong>\u00a0range. A bedroom painted black, and a playroom turned into a tent<\/h3>\n

In Westlake Village, a homeowner had given up on peel-and-stick murals – \u201cmy walls are so irregular I couldn\u2019t find anything I liked\u201d – and hired muralist Kailee instead. Walls and ceiling went matte black, then came giant white line drawings: hands emerging from clouds, hands releasing birds, hands pointing down above the bed. A $1,500-$3,000<\/strong>\u00a0project. Across town, an LA family wanted their son\u2019s playroom to\u00a0read<\/em>\u00a0as a circus tent: striped fabric gathered to the centre of the ceiling, with a scalloped valance and painted tassels running the room\u2019s full perimeter. It is entirely trompe-l\u2019\u0153il, brush-painted onto flat plaster, in the\u00a0$1,200-$2,000<\/strong>\u00a0range. Ceilings are the most underrated mural surface in the city, and the hardest to paint.<\/p>\n

Outdoors, and very small indoors<\/h3>\n

Another Westlake Village homeowner had \u201can interesting wall in my backyard\u201d and liked the Renaissance work in muralist Jamie\u2019s portfolio; the finished block wall now carries a monumental face in profile, a scallop shell, a leaping fish and olive branches – Botticelli by way of California – quoted in the $3,000-$5,000<\/strong> range with design, supplies, set-up, clean-up and travel included. Exterior masonry is why outdoor murals cost more: more prep, more paint, more sealant, more days. At the other end of the scale, a Hacienda Heights powder room got a hand-painted chinoiserie border – magnolias, gold bamboo framing and a single white crane on a dark wall – in the $300-$600<\/strong>\u00a0range.<\/p>\n

Murals for LA businesses: rescues, studios and one painted live on television<\/h2>\n

Painted on air, under the Santa Monica pier<\/h3>\n

Heal the Bay asked for its logo reinterpreted with a street-art vibe on an 8 \u00d7 16 ft plywood panel – and the painting would be covered live on KTLA. Jamie took it: a breaking wave in a dozen blues, an X-ray fish, kelp, jellyfish and \u201cprotect what you love\u201d hand-lettered across the swell. Budget in the $600-$1,200<\/strong> range, invoice paid in full, and the quote covered supplies, labour and image rights – worth settling whenever a mural will appear on camera.<\/p>\n

A dog rescue\u2019s play yard<\/h3>\n

Westside German Shepherd Rescue wanted its play yard to stop looking like a yard. Muralist Jeff painted an 8 \u00d7 10 ft panel – pine forest, a meadow of dandelions, a shepherd mid-stride down the path, the yard\u2019s name lettered across the top – sealed it with a UV coating and installed it on the wall. Murals painted on panel and then mounted are a genuinely useful option for rendered walls, rentals and anything that may need to move. A $1,200-$2,500<\/strong>\u00a0project, five stars:<\/p>\n

A personal-training studio in Silver Lake wanted its own name reimagined as a wildstyle piece across a 50-foot interior wall, in colours that fluoresce: under the studio\u2019s purple UV rig, the greens and pinks in muralist Riley\u2019s outline glow off the wall. The whole thing came in for a few hundred dollars.<\/p>\n
