You may be wondering – what is Art Basel? If you haven’t immersed yourself into the international art scene, then Art Basel is the stepping stone into a world of art. Straight from the horses-mouth, “Art Basel is a for-profit, privately owned and managed, international art fair staged annually in Basel, Switzerland; Miami Beach; Hong Kong and from 2022, Paris. Art Basel works in collaboration with the host city’s local institutions to help grow and develop art programs.”
What is Art Basel?
The international contemporary art fair is held once a year in three cities across the globe – Basel (after its namesake) in Switzerland, Hong Kong in China and Miami Beach in Florida. The artwork featured consists of everything from canvas paintings, illustrations, photography, digital art, video art, installations and sculptures.
The events primary focus is showing and selling spectacular artwork, but it is also known for its flashy parties, live performances and workshops that patrons can enjoy.
Art Basel in Switzerland is held at the Messe Basel in Basel. The venue holds work by over 4,000 artists. Basel’s American event takes place at the Miami Beach Convention Centre and welcomes over 70,000 visitors through its doors. Work from over 250 galleries worldwide are hosted at the Convention Centre. Finally, the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre offers an in-depth analysis of the region’s historical and cutting-edge artworks.
History of Art Basel
Art Basel began in 1970. Founded by a trio of Swiss art professionals it quickly became a rival of an equally as popular contemporary art fair in Germany, the Art Cologne.
Hosting over 90 galleries from 10 different galleries over 16,000 visitors came through Art Basel in its first year. It wasn’t until 2002 when Miami Beach became the new space for Art Basel and 2013 when Hong Kong opened its doors.
