The Sailor Hand Painted Skateboard by Jordan T. Mystic in Katoomba

The Sailor Hand Painted Skateboard

THIS IS REINCARNATED ART! I call it that because I'm this current world, we are not only looking for a way to bring a more integrated relationship with the environment by recycling and reusing as much as we can. So during the pandemic, I decided it was time to re-paint some old items of mine sitting around the house and give them new life. This is the Third piece in that set and the first step towards my latest products. This step will include works made by myself as well as commission pieces if there is anybody out there who so chooses to join me in this mission. This piece represents the Third tier of the product, which I'm calling “Maximal or Extra Detailed". The Mission: To reduce waste and the strain on the planet by slowing down fast fashion and reincarnating the world's forgotten items with art. To bring new life to be old and discarded things. To use art to show our respect for Mother Nature through art and how we approach making art. In short; "To make art today to change tomorrow." "Generally, Buddhists believe that there is no beginning to birth and that once we achieve liberation from the cycle of existence by overcoming our karma and destructive emotions, we will not be reborn under the sway of these conditions." - The Dalai Lama This piece was done in the style of a modern tattoo and illustration work, and the colour choice was based on the famous Sailor Jerry's tattoo artist, Sailor Jerry, and the palette he used in his tattoo art. The juxtaposition of the modern complex line work with character choices like octopus tentacles and nautical themes, like a sailor and skulls of animals, is a homage to Sailor Jerry. The sailor is a representation of all of us as a man of the sea. He is floating on the sea as we often do through life. This is why he keeps his compass, representing morals, to guide us through our lives and on our journey. The Owl skull in the centre represents the barn owl skull. The barn owl is a herald of the afterlife in Aztec mythology. This element represents our connection as people to the afterlife and a reminder of the ancient stoic statement, "Memento Mori"; "Remember, you will die". This is something I remind myself of every single moment of the day to stay present. The sailor has a pipe in his mouth, representing that we're not all perfect. We all have our vices, and we all have our coping mechanisms. The tentacles represent the external opinions and our external support units. We all have external supports that, without, we cannot live. However, we all need guidance sometimes, and The anchors represent those people outside us who anchor us and ground us. Those who remind us and support us through life's struggles and the highs and the lows when we don't have the strength. Those who give their power because we don't get away with being human alone. The piece was built with symmetry in mind. However, due to its traditional nature, it could be more symmetrical. And this is intentional because life is not necessarily symmetrical. Not a single thing in nature is purely symmetrical. And that's the beauty of life. That's the beauty of traditional art. This piece was created with acrylic paints on a plywood skateboard. It has been varnished and sealed with a matte varnish.
